Creating a pattern is always an enjoyable challenge. Usually I sketch in the evenings, then spend some time in the studio with the fabrics, but I never really know how it's going to look until it's up on the design wall and the colors start to play with each other. If the quilt is going to become a pattern, I go ahead and make another one, so I can be sure of the cutting list and check that the pattern will be ready for you to make your quilt. This time, we made a third one for the quilt along.
Making the same quilt three times might sound tedious until you're the one doing it. Each version teaches you something the last one couldn't. By the time I’m on the third, it’s the pattern and I are hearing each other loud and clear. Art doesn't usually arrive whole. It gets closer with every version you're willing to make.
There's been more joyful chaos in the studio with this version, too. It's the first quilt that Jason and I made together, and his questions about how patterns are written are already shaping how I write the next ones. Things out on my own at the design wall, but explaining each step out loud- why a seam goes one way and not another, why the cutting list matters as much as the piecing- made me look harder at the way I will be writing patterns.
