Ten years ago, on November 2, Jittery Wings took its first wobbly flight. And honestly? It happened by accident.
I had just found the Palmetto Modern Quilt Guild and signed up for a swap. I designed a “crooked Christmas tree” for my partner, who loves Dr. Seuss, never imagining it would go anywhere beyond that swap. Then it went viral. People started asking for the pattern, and suddenly I was a brand-new, completely unplanned, and untrained pattern designer, figuring it out one step at a time.
That crooked little tree started it all, but Jittery Wings has evolved from paper piecing to patterns with only 5 colors to patterns with all the colors. In 2020, when I shared All the Good, I had made it for myself. Again, it went viral, and not only did I realize I had “something” others loved and wanted, but I had also finally found my quilty heart.
A little taste of honesty here... I realized that the patterns I was making before felt a little like obligation, not passion. All the Good was dripping with passion. So, I embraced it: the process, everything about it. I started trying the method on different palettes, printed fabrics (not good), and different shapes and layouts.
It is a little hard to admit, but at 10 years, and with 11 Controlled Improv Patterns launched, I have decided to discontinue all my previous non-controlled improv printed patterns. Once they are gone, they are gone. We are going all in on All the Colors! Life is too short to keep up with something that doesn’t drive me.
Today, Jittery Wings has grown into a community of thousands of color-loving quilters who are making bold, beautiful quilts from a brave love of color and determination. I know my patterns don’t look easy and don’t follow the regular model of “traditional quilting,” but nothing is more powerful than the joy a quilter bee feels after finishing their first top and loving it.

🍽️ Giving Back: The Hive Feeds Our Neighbors
Birthdays are better when we share them. I work with several nonprofit clients who help feed our neighbors. Across the country, high costs of everyday essentials are making it harder for families to make ends meet, and changes to government nutrition programs like SNAP are creating additional challenges.
So for our birthday, the Hive is raising $2,000 for Feeding America, and Jason and I have kicked things off with the first $500. Let’s hit our goal by the big reveal on November 2 at 10 a.m. ET!
