This version of Thin Air was made using Bundle No. 3, a palette that runs the whole range from deep purple wine and berry tones through warm reds and corals, into sunny yellows, and out through greens and cool blues. It touches nearly every family on the color wheel, and it is proof that Thin Air can hold a truly full spectrum palette without ever feeling chaotic. This quilt is a twin size, made using all 24 fat quarters from the bundle.
In this post, I am walking you through how this quilt came together, why value placement matters so much when a palette spans this many hues, and how you can recreate this look using the pattern and bundle.
About the Thin Air Quilt Pattern
Thin Air is built on a line layout, blocks arranged in straight rows and columns rather than a nucleus or diagonal design. Each block is pieced from A2 through D2 pieces, sewn together and pressed so the seams nest row to row. It is a simpler layout structure than some of my other patterns, which makes it a great pattern for really focusing on value and color placement.
Design Features to Notice
What makes Thin Air work is value, not just color. Blocks are arranged from lightest at one edge of the quilt to darkest at the other, with careful attention paid to spreading out repeated colors and fabrics so no single line or block gets a distracting clump of the same hue. With a palette as full as Bundle No. 3, that value sort is what keeps a rainbow of purples, reds, yellows, greens, and blues from competing with each other. The result is a quilt that still reads as a smooth gradient of light to dark, even though the individual color choices underneath are all over the wheel.
About the Fabrics Used (Bundle No. 3)
Bundle No. 3 is 24 fat quarters of Art Gallery Pure Solids, and it is one of the widest ranging bundles I curate. This throw-size version uses the full bundle, all 24 fat quarters, and moves through purple wine and lavender water, berry and rock candy pinks, weathered brick and candied cherry reds, empire yellow and light citron, a full run of greens from olive oil to evergreen, and cool blues like mediterraneo and celestial. With a palette this broad, the line layout in Thin Air does a lot of work. Sorting into value groups first, lightest to darkest, is what lets all these different hues sit together without the quilt feeling busy or disjointed.
Binding Details (Yes, the Same Stripy Favorite)
Just like all of my quilts, I used my favorite black and white striped binding. It gives a busy, colorful top like this one a clean, graphic frame without adding another color decision, so the quilt top stays the star.
How I Quilted This Version
This Thin Air quilt is finished with straight line quilting, sewn on my domestic machine. Simple straight lines let the value gradient and piecing carry the design without competing with it, and it is an approachable finishing option if you are working on a domestic machine at home too.
