Sly Spark Quilt Pattern: The Bundle No. 35 Version

Here we go again. This is our second Sly Spark, and we could not help ourselves. Some patterns pull you in. Some you love so much you just cannot let them go. Sly Spark is both.

This time I sewed it up in Bundle No. 35, and it is all heat and glow, with a dark little secret tucked right in the middle.

Meet Sly Spark

Sly Spark is built on one humble unit: the half rectangle triangle. Tall, skinny, and a little bit sneaky.

Here is the twist. In most of my quilts, the light values gather in the center and glow outward. Sly Spark flips that on its head. The darkest fabrics, the blacks and plums and wines, pool in the middle like a cracked egg yolk, and the brights burn around them. Around here we literally call it the egg yolk.

That dark center is the spark. It pulls your eye in, and then all that gold and orange pushes it right back out again.

Fabrics: Bundle No. 35

I wanted this quilt to feel like the last ten minutes of a campfire. So Bundle No. 35 runs from Summer Sun gold through Mandarin, Sweet Tangerine, Marmalade, and Coral Reef, heats up with Autumnal and Aurora Red, then deepens into Spiceberry, Bougainvillea, Purple Wine, Plum Preserve, and one bold Caviar black.

That Caviar matters more than you might think. It is the anchor that makes the egg yolk read from across the room. Without it, the center would just be a little moodier than the edges. With it, the whole quilt snaps into focus.

This is exactly why I build bundles. A curated pull gives you that wild, scrappy, every-triangle-is-different look, but the values are already sorted for you. You get the sparkle without the guesswork.

Bundle No. 35 is twelve Art Gallery Fabrics PURE Solids. Here they are, darkest to brightest:

  1. Caviar (PE 413)
  2. Plum Preserve (PE 493)
  3. Purple Wine (PE 476)

  5. Spiceberry (PE 427)
  6. Aurora Red (PE 456)
  7. Autumnal (PE 538)
  8. Coral Reef (PE 438)
  9. Marmalade (PE 539)
  10. Summer Sun (PE 514)

Cutting with the Beeliner

Half rectangle triangles have a reputation. People hear the name and picture wonky points and a seam ripper with a lot of mileage on it. I get it. That is exactly why I made the Beeliner.

The Beeliner takes the fuss out of the odd angles. You line it up, you cut, you sew, and your points land where they belong. No templates, no tracing, no math scribbled on the back of an envelope.

For Sly Spark, every single unit was cut and trimmed with the Beeliner. When you are making this many triangles, that kind of speed and accuracy is the difference between a happy afternoon and a long one.

Piecing and Layout

Once the units are sewn, the fun part starts. I put everything up on the design wall and played. The rule is simple: darks drift toward the middle, brights drift toward the edges. The rest is up to you.

Do not aim for perfect. Aim for a glow. Let a gold triangle wander into the dark zone now and then. Let a plum show up near the border. Those little surprises are what keep the eye moving.

One trick I lean on every time: step back and take a photo. Your phone camera shrinks the quilt down and shows you the values in a way your eyes cannot up close. If the egg yolk reads on your screen, it will read on the bed.

From there, I sewed the units into columns and joined the columns. Press carefully and take your time matching those points. The Beeliner did the hard work up front, so this part goes together quicker than you would expect.

Quilting: Straight Lines on the Janome

Most of our quilts get quilted right here in the studio on our Janome domestic machine. Why? Because that is what most of you are sewing on too. We want every sample we make to be one you can finish at home, start to end, with the machine you already have.

For Sly Spark, I kept it simple with straight lines. This top already has plenty to say. Every triangle is pointing somewhere, and the color is doing a lot of talking. Straight line quilting adds texture without fighting the design. It lets the spark be the star.

A walking foot, a little patience, and a good cup of coffee will get you there. If you have been nervous about quilting your own tops, this is a great place to start.
