Hi, quilter bees! I am SO excited to introduce you to something I’ve dreamed about for a long time: Build a Color Flow™ Bundle, a tool right inside our website that lets you design your own Pure Solids bundle and watch it turn into a quilt as you go.
In the video, I take you on a little test drive. I build two bundles, compare them, save my favorite, and show you how we number your fabrics when you order. Here’s a quick guide, too, so you can follow along.
Where to find it
Go to jitterywingsquiltco.com and click Build a Bundle in the menu. It works on your phone too. It just looks a little different because the screen is smaller.
Step 1: Choose your size and cut
You’ll start with a blank quilt canvas. Choose 12 colors or 24 colors, and the quilt changes size to match. Then choose fat quarters or half yards. If a color is out of stock in the cut you chose, you won’t be able to pick it.
Step 2: Find your colors
All of the Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Solids are listed for you, and the search bar is pretty powerful. If you have the color card, you can search by Pure Solid number, or you can search by color.
Step 3: Use my Value Groups
Every color is coded with the same value groups I use in my patterns:
- Group 1: lightest
- Group 2: light to medium
- Group 3: medium to dark
- Group 4: darkest
As you pick colors, the counter at the bottom keeps track of how many you have in each group. It turns green when you’re in a good range. For a 24-color bundle, splitting evenly means about six from each group.
One thing to know: value is relative. If a quilt leans darker overall, a color I’d usually call a Group 2 might act more like a Group 1 in that quilt. Use the groups as a guide, and trust your eyes.
Step 4: Play with the layout
This is the really fun part! Choose how your colors are arranged in the quilt preview:
- Light in the middle: lights in the center, getting darker toward the edges
- Diagonal: a light diagonal across the quilt, getting darker toward the corners
- Scattered: what we’d call random
In any of them, hit Shuffle to move your colors around and see new combinations.
Step 5: Watch your Color Flow™ line
Under the quilt, you’ll see your colors lined up in a Color Flow™ line, built on my Color Flow Theory. It updates every time you add or remove a color, working from light to dark. One little change can shift the whole order, and we’re still fine-tuning it.
Don’t love a color? Just tap it again to take it out, and try something else.
Step 6: Save your bundle (important!)
Not ready to buy yet? Hit Save and give your bundle a name, like “Mitzie’s Bundle 1.”
Please save! If you leave your browser without saving, your bundle will go away.
Step 7: Share it
Hit Share and a link to your bundle is copied. Paste it into an email or text to send to yourself, or to a friend. This is perfect if you’re making a quilt for someone and want to show them the colors first. Open that link later and your bundle will be right there.
Step 8: Build another one and compare
Hit Clear to start fresh, build a second bundle, and save that one too. In the video I made a “Yellow Green Version.” Now you can compare your saved bundles side by side and see which one feels right. If you change your mind about one, remove it.
Step 9: Add to cart, and we’ll number your fabrics
When you’ve found the one, open that bundle and add it to your cart in the size you chose. Here’s my favorite part: we number your fabrics 1 to 24 in Color Flow™ order, and the numbers print on your packing slip. Your fat quarters arrive with numbered stickers, so you can match them to the slip and lay them out in your Color Flow™ order.
A couple of things to keep in mind
- The color pictures are the manufacturer’s images. They’re really close, but a computer screen is never quite the same as real fabric.
- This is brand new, and we’re still working out a few kinks, especially in the Color Flow™ order. Fabric isn’t the same as color on a screen, so we’ll keep improving it as we learn.
For right now, this is just a dream come true for me, and I hope you love it as much as I do. Have fun, play with it, and let me know what you think!
Check it out here.
